Wired Amazon Donations

In some parts of the Amazon, deforestation, climate change, illegal hunting, and environmental contamination have condemned 51 species to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In Madre de Dios - Peru, the AmazonCam with hundred of citizen scientists are helping to further our knowledge of all wildlife in Tambopata, one immediate goal is to determine the jaguar population in the Tambopata National Reserve. Pictures taken through the camera traps that participants in citizen science set during rainforest tours every year contribute to this mission greatly.

The Amazon rainforest harbors more biodiversity than any other terrestrial ecosystem on Earth. However, it is also one of the least explored parts of our planet, especially its majestic canopy that towers over 50 meters above the forest floor: out of reach to all but a tiny handful of expert tree climbers. Fortunately, technology has provided a way to obtain a bird’s eye view of the rainforest canopy without risking life and limb: using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or in everyday parlance: a drone.

We have one of South America’s primary wild primate research centers, with multiple groups of all eight species on the Tambopata River, all habituated through regular contact with visitors and scientists over the last 25 years. In 8 primates project we use behavioral follows and bioacoustics to look at the ranging patterns and communication of all eight monkey species at Tambopata. We are developing extensive libraries of calls for all monkey species, and are using these to detect monkeys in the wider forests of Peru. We need participants of all levels to add to our growing dataset.

The Tambopata Macaw Project aims to reduce threats to macaw conservation in Madre de Dios. We improve artificial nests to: - Prevent parasites and enhance internal conditions. - Protect chicks from predators with designs resembling natural nests. - Increase lifespan and reduce maintenance costs. - Monitor them remotely. This season, the project seeks to enhance nests in Tambopata and Bahuaja Sonene, develop remote monitoring for Colorado Claylick, and propose management guidelines in alignment with the conservation of priority areas.
